Salary: Up to €133 per annum

As Consultant Psychiatrist s/he will have overall responsibility for the:

  • Provision of the services of a psychiatrist to patients and residents and for the purpose of regulatory compliance.
  • Support the continued development of Clinical Governance and to assist in the implementation of the strategic and operational plans.
  • Provision of Clinical Services within a legally compliant framework.
  • Efficient, effective and economic provision of clinical services within a defined budgetary framework.
  • Provision of teaching, research and academic support at a senior level as developed at associated educational facilities, e.g. Trinity College Dublin.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant’s area of competence and in line with policies as specified by the Clinical Director.
  • Work collaboratively with the Clinical Director to support the development and delivery of operational and strategic plans.
  • Advise the Clinical Director of clinical priorities and pressures and be an active participant in strategic development discussions.
  • Provide for and ensure the delivery of positive patient and resident outcomes and with the continued strive for excellence.
  • Management of the clinical team members as designated by the Clinical Director.
  • Liaise with clinical colleagues, the Clinical Director, Director of Nursing, Medical Officer and other clinical disciplines to ensure that activities across the centre are appropriately co-ordinated and integrated.
  • Develop new innovative ways of delivering clinical services.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant HSE and Mental Health Commission requirements, including adherence to MHC regulations on care planning and medication management.
  • Ensure that a positive working relationship with external partners including Health Service Executive, Private Health Insurers and other Academic Institutions is maintained.
  • Ensure that systems are in place to deliver accurately and in timely fashion, all statutory information requirements including, for example, Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
  • Participate in systems to provide clinical information to staff that enables them to benchmark and audit their practice so as to improve the patient and resident’s experience.
  • Maintain regular communication with all staff in the centre.
  • Facilitate the maintenance of professional clinical competence.
  • Foster an open and inclusive style of working which facilitates positive relationships.
  • Participate in performance management programme.
  • Ensure the highest standards of clinical effectiveness in the Hospital, including the delivery of local and national recommendations, such as Mental Health Commission, Health Information and Quality Authority, and HSE guidelines, College of Psychiatry of Ireland guidelines and other national reports.
  • Lead on Quality Improvement, Audits and Service Evaluations.
  • Maintain a patient-safety focus at all times.
  • Maintain one’s own professional competence and development to a high standard and demonstrate a proven record of undertaking C.M.E. and C.P.D.
  • Assist the Clinical Director to ensure that appropriate medical cover is available at all times having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive.
  • Assist with collaborative teaching and training programmes or facilities in accordance with company strategy.
  • Promote research activity and teaching in the centre in accordance with company strategy.

Person Specification:

  • Full registration in the Specialist Register (Psychiatrist) of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland or entitlement to be so registered.
  • Registered as a general adult psychiatrist with a sub specialised interest in rehabilitation is an advantage.
  • Have a management level or position of responsibility to their clinical area.
  • Demonstrate an ability to lead change and to develop clinical services.
  • Energetic individual with solid clinical experience in working with a team of diverse clinicians and strong knowledge of the concepts and operation of Clinical Governance.
  • Strong ability to teach, manage, participate and play a key role in the practice and education of medical students, medical staff, nursing and other allied health professions and promote and engage in the teaching/training/support of others as appropriate.
  • Have a good knowledge and experience of health, safety and other statutory regulations affecting a healthcare organisation.
