Mercy Ships is seeking dedicated and skilled Surgeons across various specialties to join our Operating Room team. We have a particular need for specialists in ophthalmic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, head and neck surgery, as well as general surgeons. This role involves providing surgical intervention for a variety of conditions, including congenital, developmental, or degenerative diseases, as well as reconstructive procedures following injury or infection. The position requires a commitment of 2 weeks to 3 months, offering an opportunity to make a profound impact on the lives of patients in need.

Key Responsibilities:
– Perform surgical procedures and manage post-operative care, adhering to universal precautions.
– Assess and select appropriate surgical candidates, considering Mercy Ships’ facilities, available follow-up, and host nation services.
– Communicate effectively with patients and their families about procedures, outcomes, and potential complications, using diagrams and translators as needed.
– Collaborate with anesthetic providers and hospital physicians to ensure optimal patient health pre- and post-operatively.
– Operate on scheduled patients as coordinated by the Operating Room Manager.
– Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including patient conditions during rounds and post-operative visits.
– Provide consultation for surgical patients who develop complications after departure.
– Participate in the duty surgeon roster and mentor other surgeons as needed.

Qualifications:

– Proficiency in servant leadership, collaborative work, and demonstrating accountability.
– Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute to community life onboard.
– Specialty-trained surgeon with active licensure/registration in your home nation.
– Minimum of 2 years of surgical practice post-specialty training.
– Recent surgical practice experience (within the last six months preferred).
– Fluency in English, both written and oral.

Education & Experience:
– Active surgical license/registration.
– Specialty training completed with at least 2 years of surgical experience.
