„Combination Therapy of Levothyroxine and Liothyronine in Post-Surgical Hypothyroidism: A Feasibility Trial‟
A recent study published in an academic medical center examined the efficacy of combination therapy of Levothyroxine (LT4) and Liothyronine (LT3) in patients with post-surgical hypothyroidism. The study, a 24-week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, aimed to compare the effects of LT4/LT3 versus LT4/placebo on various parameters.
Twelve patients, 10 women and 2 men, were included in the analysis. No significant differences were observed in Thyrotropin (TSH) levels between the two groups. However, following thyroidectomy, LT4/placebo resulted in higher free T4 levels compared to LT4/LT3. Additionally, the combination therapy appeared to prevent non-significant increases in weight and cholesterol levels.
The study concluded that LT4 replacement alone may not normalize free T4 and total T3 levels in patients with post-surgical hypothyroidism. The combination therapy of LT4 and LT3 could be more effective in preventing adverse changes in weight and cholesterol associated with hypothyroidism.
This trial provides valuable insights for clinicians managing patients with post-surgical hypothyroidism, highlighting the potential benefits of combination therapy with LT4 and LT3. Further research in larger cohorts is warranted to confirm these findings and optimize treatment strategies for this patient population.
