In recent months, the outpatient and inpatient psychiatric wards have undergone extensive improvements and reorganization of their operations. Diverse and important work for the treatment and support of individuals with mental disorders is carried out in the wards. The inpatient ward attends to all general acute psychiatric conditions and has easy access to electroconvulsive treatments when needed. The outpatient ward provides both individual and group therapies, along with follow-up care for chronic patients. Additionally, there is a unit that deals with treatment-resistant depression including TMS and esketamine treatments. The outpatient ward also offers a variety of group therapies and rehabilitation, for instance, through behavior modification, cognitive-behavioral therapy, DAM therapy, and dynamic teachings.

This is a 50-100% position available immediately or after further agreement.

The SAk psychiatric ward is the only psychiatric ward outside the capital area and serves residents of northern and eastern Iceland aged 18 and older. The ward is divided into an inpatient and a day and outpatient ward with diverse tasks and opportunities to work closely with mental health professionals. There is good cooperation with other hospital departments, primary health care centers, municipal social services, the psychiatric division of the National Hospital, and SÁÁ institutions for addiction patients. The hospital is a teaching hospital, providing general and specialized healthcare services with an emphasis on emergency services and major specialty treatments.

Qualifications

  • Icelandic medical license and specialist qualifications in psychiatry
  • Interest in providing meticulous and evidence-based treatment
  • Interest in development and specialization in the job and flexibility to adopt innovations
  • Professional knowledge, experience, and competence in communication, cooperation, and independent working methods
  • A requirement for impeccable character, i.e., having a good reputation and that behavior and actions at the workplace and outside it are compatible with the job

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Evaluation and diagnosis of patient problems
  • Participation in multidisciplinary team work in inpatient and day and outpatient wards
  • Participation in quality and improvement work
  • Participation in the education of healthcare professions, training of assistant and department doctors in addition to opportunities for research work
  • Service to patients at institutions in northern and eastern Iceland
  • The positions involve on-call duties and specialist consultation in psychiatry
