Locum Cardiologist - St Helena Island, South Atlantic

6 weeks FTC (plus quarantine) ASAP

If you can assess and treat cardiology clinical cases, your costed proposal or expression of interest is invited to bring your specialist skills to an island community.

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

You will arrange follow-up care, offering support and advice to the medical team and training in the latest clinical issues, advising on new texts/journals, equipment, pharmaceuticals and consumables to be acquired. You will also review referral patterns for cardiology cases over the past 3 years and advise on emergency distant support requirements and referral criteria.

Reporting directly to the Senior Medical Officer, your findings and recommendations will be shared and discussed with the SMO and Director of Health prior to departure and a completion report submitted within six subsequent weeks. In advance of your visit the SMO will liaise with you to prepare a list of referred patients and their appointments to make available additional pharmaceuticals and supplies as needed.

A fully qualified cardiologist with substantial post-registration experience, you must have full GMC registration or equivalent and good standing with that body. Able to treat and evaluate cardiac patients with the equipment and facilities available on island, your experience in advanced echocardiography will have included at least 200 examinations annually. You should know how to check and programme Medtronic pacemakers, be able to perform and interpret stress tests and have knowledge of GUCH.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded by the UK Government through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
