GPs / Family Medicine Doctors for New Zealand

Salaries in New Zealand are attractive with low taxation (the tax rate is currently capped at 33%) and no National Insurance contribution allowing for an excellent quality of life. Doctors generally report that working conditions are also very favourable in comparison, with more study and annual leave and fewer working hours, allowing for a better work/life balance. 
GPs tend to earn between NZ$150,000 (89,000 EUR) and NZ$185,000 (110,000 EUR) a year. This depends on your experience and the location of the position. Often GPs will work a four or four and a half day week, with a typical 36 hour work week and a minimum of 20 days annual leave – allowing for a family friendly lifestyle. Appointment slots of 10–15 minutes are also standard practice.


In order to be invited and granted registration in New Zealand and work as GP, the applying doctor will be instantly considered if they have completed their specialist General Practice Qualification/Training in either Canada, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, USA or the United Kingdom.

If they haven’t obtained their specialist training in one of these countries, they may still be granted registration if they meet the following:

• They must have worked as a full time GP/Family Medicine Consultant for at least 33 months out of the last 48 months in the following countries: 
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands.
• Doctors must have also sat and passed the OET level B / IELTS exam to the following pass rate if English is not their first language. This IELTS exam is only valid for 2 years once passed and the pass marks are: Speaking 7.5 Listening 7.5 Writing 7.0 Reading 7.0
