Volunteers needed for the psychosocial support team – Lesvos

Volunteers needed for the psychosocial support team – Lesvos – minimum of 2 weeks

Boat Refugee Foundation’s psychosocial support (PSS) team is currently working on Lesbos in refugee camp Moria, where thousands of people reside. In order to carry out our work well, knowledge about group processes in an intercultural setting is essential. It enables you to work with people with different cultural backgrounds and habits, who have been living in a refugee camp for a long time, in harrowing conditions.
Due to the psychological effects this might have on people, it is also important that you know how to handle behavior problems and aggression. Moreover, we are recruiting people who have specific knowledge about education to assist both children and adults in their personal development.

Our PSS mission aspires to empower people. This means that our activities are run by refugees themselves, as much as possible. Men and women who are teachers in their home countries, provide the lessons at school. Refugees fluent in multiple languages help out with the translation of workshops. The interior of the community center was built by carpenters originating from different countries. Boat Refugee Foundation facilitates, supports and guides and supervises the activities where necessary.

We do not offer one-on-one consultations or psychotherapy. We offer a varied range of activities. The first shifts start at 09:00, and the last shifts end around 22:00. When you’re not on shift, you will have time to prepare the activities.
What do we expect from you (required)?

• Your English is fluent (knowledge of other languages like French, Arabic or Farsi is an advantage)
• You have a valid driving license and you’re able to drive stick (you’ll have to drive a car daily)
• You are available for at least two weeks, although we prefer volunteers wh can stay 3 weeks or longer
• You are able to work late evening shifts and can handle a short night of sleep
• You can cope with emotional and confronting situations and you know how to separate work from your personal life
